🇳🇱 Nederlands Viva Afrika — een stukje Afrika, hartje Rotterdam
Toen wij in 2003 mijn eerste restaurant opende, had ik één droom: de andere kant van Afrika laten zien. Niet het Afrika dat je in het nieuws ziet — van honger, oorlog en armoede. Maar het Afrika dat ik ken: enorm gastvrij, warm, sociaal. Waar mensen samen aan tafel schuiven, eten met de handen uit één schotel, drinken, lachen, bijkletsen over de gewone dingen van het leven.
Dat wilde ik naar Rotterdam brengen.
Zes jaar later, in 2009, opende Viva Afrika aan de Nieuwe Binnenweg. Een kleurrijk, ruim restaurant waar je die sfeer meteen voelt zodra je binnenstapt. Wandschilderingen, beschilderde tafels, warme kleuren, Afrikaanse muziek op de achtergrond — een plek waar de tijd even stilstaat en waar u even op vakantie bent.
Gastvrijheid begint bij hoe iemand wordt ontvangen. Voordat ik zelf ondernemer werd, kwam ik als Afrikaan zelf ook op veel plekken. Het welkomstgevoel was niet altijd hetzelfde. Toen ik mijn eigen zaak begon, wilde ik dat iedereen — waar u ook vandaan komt — bij ons binnenloopt met een glimlach en zich meteen thuis voelt. Dat is voor mij Karibu: welkom, u hoort erbij, ga zitten, eet met ons mee.
Onze keuken Bij Viva Afrika serveren we gerechten uit Oost- en West-Afrika — van pittige stoofpotten en aromatische kipgerechten tot verse vis, romige pindasauzen en warme deelschotels. Onze kruiden importeren wij rechtstreeks uit Afrika, omdat de smaak begint bij het echte werk. Er wordt langzaam gekookt, met zorg en aandacht, zoals thuis.
Samen delen — of gewoon voor uzelf Bij ons kunt u met een gezelschap aanschuiven en samen eten uit één grote schotel — zoals het in Afrika gaat. Maar bent u alleen? Ook dan bent u van harte welkom. Al onze gerechten zijn ook per persoon te bestellen.
Vegetariërs, veganisten en kinderen zijn bij ons thuis. Al onze gerechten worden zonder alcohol bereid. Aan de bar staan Afrikaanse bieren klaar, en op de kaart vindt u onze uitgebreide selectie voor-, hoofd- en nagerechten.

Goed om te weten Al ons vlees (rund, lam, kip en kalkoen) is Halal-gecertificeerd. Aan onze bar serveren wij ook alcoholische dranken, voor gasten die dat wensen.

🇬🇧 English Viva Afrika — a piece of Africa, in the heart of Rotterdam
When I opened my first restaurant in 2003, I had one dream: to show the other side of Africa. Not the Africa you see in the news — of hunger, war and poverty. But the Africa I know: warm, welcoming, deeply social. Where people gather around the table, eat with their hands from one shared plate, drink, laugh, and talk about the small things in life.
That is what I wanted to bring to Rotterdam.
Six years later, in 2009, Viva Afrika opened its doors on the Nieuwe Binnenweg. A colorful, spacious restaurant where you feel that atmosphere the moment you walk in. Wall paintings, hand-painted tables, warm colors, African music playing softly in the background — a place where time slows down and where you’re on holiday for the evening.
Hospitality starts with how someone is welcomed. Before I became an entrepreneur myself, I visited many places as an African guest. The welcome wasn’t always the same. When I opened my own restaurant, I wanted every guest — wherever you’re from — to walk in with a smile and feel at home right away. That, to me, is Karibu: welcome, you belong here, sit down, eat with us.
Our kitchen At Viva Afrika we serve dishes from East and West Africa — from spicy stews and aromatic chicken dishes to fresh fish, creamy peanut sauces and warm sharing platters. Our spices are imported directly from Africa, because real flavor starts with the real thing. Everything is cooked slowly, with care and attention — the way it’s done at home.
Share together — or enjoy on your own At Viva Afrika you can gather with friends and family and share one large platter, the African way. But if you’re on your own? You’re just as welcome. All our dishes are also available as individual portions.
Vegetarians, vegans and children are at home with us. All our dishes are prepared without alcohol. At the bar you’ll find a selection of African beers, and our full menu offers a wide range of starters, main courses and desserts.

Good to know All our meat (beef, lamb, chicken and turkey) is Halal-certified. At our bar we also serve alcoholic beverages for guests who wish to enjoy them.
